FIREFIGHTER INJURED AT NJ FIRE

Brian Kazmierzak    June 6, 2018    No Comments

A dog was rescued from a 2-alarm fire on Walnut Street Saturday.

According to Montclair Fire officials, at 1:34 PM, the Montclair Fire Department received a call reporting a house fire. Units from four other towns provided assistance to help bring it under control in nearly an hour.

Responding units arrived to find heavy fire venting out of the 2nd floor rear windows, fire officials reported.  Upon inspection, firefighters discovered that the residents were not home at the time of the fire and were able to rescue the family dog.

Reported damages included the first-floor, which sustained smoke and water damage, the second-floor of the house, which sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage, and the third-floor sustained fire and heavy smoke damage.

Deputy Chief Robert Duncan reported, “Substantial overhaul was necessary to ensure fire was extinguished in all walls and voids.”

Fire officials indicated that units from Bloomfield, Clifton, Cedar Grove and West Orange responded to assist.  Montclair Ambulance Unit also responded along with Montclair Police and Verona Rescue Squad.

MAU officials wrote on their Facebook page, “MAU provided some oxygen and an ACO from the Montclair Animal Shelter checked the pup out while awaiting the owners.”

“There was one firefighter injury,” added Duncan.  “There were no reported civilian injuries.”

The last units cleared the scene at 5:30pm.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
