One person was killed in an early morning fire in Little Mahanoy Township, said Milton State Police Trooper Kirk Renn.
Renn said the Northumberland County Coroner was called to the Stiely Mobile Home Park after the fire broke out around 3 a.m. Coroner James Kelley confirmed the fatality this morning but has not yet released the identity of the victim.
George Stiely Sr., owner of the mobile home park, said one person and three dogs did not get out of the lot ten structure. He said it was a family of renters inside the building.
Renn said seven people were inside the home on Sunshine Road when the fire broke out around 3 a.m.. Trevorton Fire Chief Ed Reed said four of those people were taken to Geisinger-Shamokin for smoke inhalation. AREA Service and Trevorton Emergency Services were called to the scene.
The fire occurred at 919 on Sunshine Road. Reed said they received the initial call at 3:01 a.m.
“Within 10 minutes, the fire was fully involved,” Reed said. The firefighters had a delayed response to the fire due to the “cold weather, everything freezing…and no water supply,” added Reed.
“We had to call a second alarm fire because being a rural trailer park, there are no fire hydrants,” he said.
Herndon Fire Company, East Cameron, Lower Augusta, Stonington, Station 290 Ralpho Township, Shamokin Engines 11, 33 and Truck 32, Shamokin Rescue 62, Coal Township Rescue 193, Engines 161/Forest Hill, 111 and 11 were also called to the scene.
“I want to thank everyone for their work,” said Reed. He said it took them two hours to get the fire under control. They were still using hoses on the house at 9 a.m.
Reed added one firefighter was injured during the incident when they slipped on ice and hurt their shoulder. The firefighter was sent to the hospital.
Renn said the fire is undetermined at this time.
