In Chile, during a wildland fire, the wind changed as did the intensity of the fire, resulting in a volunteer Firefighter suffering 85% of his body burned, compromising his respiratory tract.
The volunteer Firefighter, Álvaro Seitz Scherer is a member of Company 1 of the Ercilla Fire Department. He drove the apparatus “B1” to a fire that was reported around 1430 yesterday, Wednesday, January 31, in a farm with oats and wheat.
The Firefighters were working on fighting the fire, when a sudden change in the direction of the wind caused the fire to go towards the area where the apparatus was located, forcing the Firefighters to flee. However, at that moment, FF Seitz was in the apparatus, attempting to move the rig from the fire, when the fire moved quickly and overtook him, causing severe burns and serious damage to his respiratory tract.
Last night, Wednesday, January 31, the Firefighter was transferred to the Hospital de Victoria where he underwent emergency surgery, to stabilize him-he is now on a vent. At 1400 he was transferred to Temuco Hospital, where he is interned.
Regarding the fire itself, 15 fire companies were working, with more than 100 volunteers and with the support of Cautín Fire Brigade, Temuco and other cities and it has been brought under control. Keep FF Scherer in your prayers.
