As we wrap up the 2020 Firefighter Survival Stand Down (focused on roadway survival) a driver plowed into the back of a Massachusetts State Police car which then struck a Firefighter while operating at a tractor-trailer truck fire on Interstate-91 this afternoon.
The striking driver, the West Springfield Firefighter and the Massachusetts State Trooper, who was in the cruiser when it was struck, were all brought to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
West Springfield and Holyoke Firefighters had responded to a tractor-trailer truck that caught fire at about 1215 hours. While they were working at the scene, a driver traveling northbound hit the cruiser at about 1245 hours. The force of the crash pushed the cruiser into a Holyoke firefighter who was at the scene, on foot, fighting the fire.

WEST VIRGINIA FIREFIGHTER LINE OF DUTY DEATH UPDATE:
The Iaeger Firefighter who died in the Line of Duty early this morning was trying to save an individual after they went back into the home to retrieve items. Apparently the fallen Firefighter was trying to stop that person from going back in to the well engulfed home, and soon began to feel sick from reported smoke inhalation. Unfortunately despite all efforts, the Firefighter died in the ambulance while on the way to a local hospital. More to follow.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On.
