Some of our old pals, some home builders associations, continue their efforts to fight home fire sprinklers. Their public arguments are the same-it’s a cost that shouldn’t be required. With that logic, safe electrical home wiring and smoke alarms should be voluntary and purchased “at the discretion of the homeowner” as well.
HeII, lets give car buyers 3 choices of braking systems-good, better and best. Maybe the makers of airplanes shouldn’t be required to have “all” of those crazy gauges-just a few-in order to keep their costs “affordable.” But yet some home builders continue to win even though their arguments don’t hold water.
In fact, state lawmakers have made it illegal for Texas cities to mandate sprinklers be installed in all new single-family homes. Why would any elected official support it being ILLEGAL for a homeowner to install a fire sprinkler system?
Understand the facts. In 2015 for example, home fires caused 2,560 deaths, 11,075 civilian injuries, and $7 billion in direct damage. On average, seven (7) people die in U.S. home fires per day. ..and we aren’t even including firefighter injury and death.
Not surprisingly, well respected Texas State Fire Marshal Chief Chris Connealy says every home in Texas should have fire sprinklers – but state lawmakers have refused to make it a requirement for new homes. And yet-in some areas, it is ILLEGAL.
A few years ago, Texas lawmakers quietly hid (in a plumbing bill) a measure banning Texas cities from requiring sprinklers in new homes. Imagine actually wanting to require residential fire sprinklers and your city isn’t allowed to?
IMO, it’s not that anyone wants anyone to get hurt-not at all-but if fires were put out way quicker (as is the case with residential fire sprinklers), that could very significantly impact the residential home re-building business. As always, follow the money.
Here is the most recent story about our friends doing all they can to beat down mandatory life saving residential fire sprinklers.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On.
