FIRE CHIEF DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-MASSIVE HEART ATTACK AT FIRE SCENE-MS

We regret to pass on to you that Fire Chief Bill Matthews, 73, of the Bassfield VFD died in the Line of Duty yesterday.
Chief Matthews was found unconscious in the driver’s seat of the fire apparatus he was operating on the scene of a brush fire working to protect a nearby church. Another firefighter on a hose line asked the Chief to reposition the apparatus, but there was no response. Fire Chief Mathews, a deeply loved and respected icon, was immediately removed from the truck, given CPR and related treatament, and then transported to Jefferson Davis Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

NEW ZEALAND MILITARY HERO/FIREFIGHTING HELICOPTER PILOT KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY FIGHTING FIRE
We regret to pass on the firefighting Line of Duty Death of New Zealand’s Cpl. David Steven Askin, who won one of the country’s top awards for bravery for his actions in Afghanistan. He died in the Line of Duty this week when his unit when down while operating at a fire.
Askin was a member of the elite Special Air Service and his identity was kept secret when he won the Gallantry Star medal in 2014. He was cited for efforts that included helping save guests during the 2011 siege of the luxury Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul that left at least 20 people dead.
“Corporal Askin was wounded by grenade and rifle fire, yet carried on his mission and rescued guests from the hotel as fire broke out,” the Defence Force said in a statement. Our condolences to all those affected by this loss. Rest In Peace.
