Just a few items…
1-Here is ANOTHER heads up on ANOTHER member of the fire service getting struck. Yesterday, FDs and numerous agencies were operating at the scene of a very tragic motorcycle accident that killed the Lititz Borough, PA Police Chief, Doug Shertzer.
While working the scene, a member of the Roherstown FD was struck after a motorist ran through the traffic cones, ran through the barricades and struck the member. He was treated for minor injuries and later released… fortunately.
There is more info on: http://www.lancasterfire.com/board/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=000776 regarding the FF struck.

I am hardly an expert on highway management but it seems to me-the ONLY way this is going to be reduced is if we either not work on the highways (not an option) or we shut down and block (with apparatus) the areas we are working in. Like any run, all circumstances are different but well continue to maintain that when working on the roads-we must act as if lunatic motorists are PLANNING on running us over… so we gotta PLAN to take active prevention measures.
Several of you wrote that the cops in some areas get all upset when we block the roads-of course they do. The time to discuss that is not on the scene-but with the bosses of both the fire and the local cops BEFORE the next run. Many more COPS get run over than we do-they have a vested interest as well… and there are numerous case studies for both. On the other hand-the fire department IC has the clear responsibility to insure the safety of their members-so doing whatever it takes may be the solution as well.
Whatever ya do-just be extremely VIGILANT, ALERT and EXPECT the worstand then operate in that mode.
