Warmest congrats to “our own” Gordon Graham on receiving the Fire Services Training Institute 2018 Howard W. Rayon Distinguished Service Award for his distinguished service, commitment and dedication in the highest honor of the American fire service and the public safety community. It will be awarded tonight, Saturday, September 7, 2019. More on that below.
As most of you know, Gordon is the sponsor and our partner in www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com. After reading The Secret List for a few years, he asked why there wasn’t an accompanying website…and a year later-the site was born. His decision to “give back” in this, and so many other ways, has made a profound and measurable difference to countless firefighters.
As a friend to every Firefighter, a noted author and lecturer (presenting annually at F.D.I.C, IAFC’s F.R.I. and many other fire, rescue and EMS conferences), speaking on leadership and risk management, Gordon is well known for his “Predictable is Preventable,” “Significant emotional events,” “If you can think it, it can happen” , “High risk, low frequency” and “No time to think” lectures.” Coupled with a 33 year career in law enforcement (retiring as a Commander of the CHP), his education as a risk manager and practicing California attorney, Gordon is internationally recognized as a leading professional in both public and private sector organizational risk management. Uniting facts, experience and humor together, Gordon has a unique and very successful way of conveying vitally important information.
Gordon is also co-founder of Lexipol. Lexipol is a unique, state of the art system that very successfully helps solve the challenge of developing real world, legal fire department policy and related operational and administrative procedures. Lexipol was actually founded in 2002 by Gordon and Bruce Praet, attorneys with extensive experience in risk management and public safety and, due to demand, launched the Lexipol FIRE program in 2014.
Gordon also co-created www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com, acknowledged as “the source” for information specifically regarding firefighter survival, health and safety. He also helped guide the IAFC in the development of FirefighterNearMiss.com.
The first FSTI Distinguished Service Award was presented during opening ceremonies of the 2009 California State Firefighters’ Association 87th Annual Conference in Sacramento to Chief Howard W. Rayon. A resolution was then presented naming the award in honor of his tremendous contributions, leadership, lifetime of achievements and dedication to the fire service. Howard was a significant influence in the development of FSTI and served as corporate secretary until his death on 19 October 2009.
The first recipient of the award was Chief Paul Stein. Other recipients include Chief Ronny J. Coleman in (2011), Chief Bill Vandevort (2012) Thomas Forster (2013), Chief Michael T. Metro (2014), Dr. Denis Onieal (2016) and Chief Randy Bruegman (2017).
Gordon held his CHP headquarters assignment until his service retirement in 2006. In 2008, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. In 2015, he received the Lifetime Dedication Award from the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute. In 2018, he received the James Oberstar Sentinel for Safety Award for his lifetime work in improving aviation safety internationally…and tonight, he will again be honored for his work on behalf of Firefighters.
He and “Mrs. G” are the proud parents of two adult children–who take their families values and beliefs along with them in their personal and professional lives.
The award will be presented to Gordon this evening, during a private ceremony in Sacramento, California.
Gordon is being recognized for the close calls he has helped avoid and the deaths he has helped prevent. To celebrate, enjoy these clips of Gordon doing what he does best-educating us in a manner that no one even comes close to.
