In yet another example of Fire Dept “Do as I say, not as I do” policies, Fire Dept administration allowed companies to stay in quarters without heat and let members use “salamander” type heaters to keep warm. One officer had the smarts enough to check CO levels and found the levels were at 40 p.p.m. We require building occupants to leave at 35p.p.m. They shut off the heaters at that point. Come on folks we’re a dept. in the frozen Northeast and we wait until it’s below freezing to address boiler issues!?! One of the leading causes theorized in FF cardiac deaths is exposure to CO. How many lives did we just save by using an ounce of common sense? Ten; 3 companies of 3 firefighters each and a Deputy Chief (Who could have relocated companies, but did not).
We are our own worst enemies when we fail to use common sense and follow our own advise.
