Fire Fighter Joe Adamkowski (49 years old) died on May 14 in a Thunder Bay hospital after a three year battle with colon cancer. On May 23, the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, in a review of his case, ruled that Joe’s colon cancer was a direct result of his occupation as a Thunder Bay fire fighter and awarded compensation benefits to his family. As a result of the WSIB decision the funeral service for Joe on Thursday will now be recognized as a Line of Duty Death.
The service in Thunder Bay will begin on Thursday May 24 with a procession from the North Central Fire Station, 60 Water Street at 10:30 a.m.. All fire service personnel are requested to wear full uniform. The memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, 349 Waverly Street at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow afterwards at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 209 at 209 Cumberland Street North.
