A woman died after suffering severe burn injuries when a fire broke out at a strip mall along Whittier Boulevard in Pico Rivera on Wednesday night, authorities said.
The fire was first reported just after 8 p.m. in the 9300 block of East Whittier Boulevard, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas told KTLA.
Firefighters found a building “fully involved” with flames on arrival, he said.
Flames engulfed one unit, later determined to be a nail salon, and made their way into a shared attic, officials said.
Firefighters declared the blaze extinguished just after 9 p.m.
Investigators believe an employee spilled some type of product in a break room and it caught fire. She was unable to get out of the building in time, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Koerner said.
Officials initially indicated a woman suffering serious burns had been hospitalized in critical condition but Koerner stated the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man and a firefighter were treated for injuries described as minor.
The incident is being investigated as an accident and was not deemed suspicious, Koerner said.
