On Saturday 10/23/2004 when our ladder truck was backing into the station, a member stood behind the truck to act as a spotter.
A 4 x 4 wood block was being used as a wheel chock. When the ladder truck backed up against the wheel chock it shot backwards catching the member in the shin. This resulted in a very painful bruise and a trip to the emergency room to be sure it was nothing worse. Members acting as spotters for vehicles backing up should stand to the side not directly behind the vehicle. Also, 4 X 4 wood blocks should not be used as wheel chocks on smooth concerte floors. We have since removed all wood blocks that were used as wheel chocks to ensure that this does not happen again.
