Firefighters from more than a dozen companies spent much of Sunday working to extinguish a difficult tire blaze at a Frazer auto scrap yard, which caused billowing smoke visible for miles around.
Frazer volunteer fire Chief Brian Gouza told reporters that six firefighters required treatment for minor injuries, primarily back and chest pain, from fighting the blaze that began around 9 a.m. at Hloznik Auto Salvage on Clarks Pike Road.
More than 100 tires caught fire, creating heavy plumes of smoke into the afternoon. Firefighters used foam to help contain the blaze, which could have been worse if it spread to other salvage yard materials, including gasoline tanks.
The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
