One man remains hospitalized after five firefighters sustained injuries during a training exercise gone wrong Tuesday morning.
Four were taken to a clinic and cleared to go back to work.
Captain Frank McKenzie said the hospitalized firefighter needs to be released and cleared by the city to return to work, which could happen as soon as his next shift or a few days from now.
McKenzie said firefighters were working on an exercise that involved a smoke machine and firefighters had just completed search techniques when the balcony collapsed beneath their feet.
The hospital owns the complex the firefighters train in, but investigators say the structure was prepared and inspected before the exercise began.
The training exercise started around 9 a.m. at a home in the 4000 block of Independence Drive.
There were two previous exercises on June 2 and 3.
McKenzie said he doesn’t know when or where they will resume training at this time.
