Three firefighters were injured and 12 families displaced after a fire broke out at the Merrillville Terrace Apartments Sunday night.
Merrillville Fire Chief Ed Yerga said crews responded at 6:38 p.m. to the apartment complex at 116 W. 71st Ave. for a report of a fire coming from one of the buildings.
Upon arrival, crews fought the blaze, containing it to the apartment where it originated, Yerga said. However, the remaining 11 units in the building sustained smoke and water damage.
Two firefighters suffered minor cuts in the blaze and a third firefighter reported heat exhaustion. All were treated and released on scene, Yerga said.
Crown Point, Lake Ridge and Hobart fire departments assisted at the scene while Munster Fire Department filled in at one of Merrillville’s fire stations, Yerga said.
