An unoccupied structure of balloon-frame construction with a fire in the basement can be a recipe for disaster. Fifty-two firefighters responded to such a blaze at 10:25 p.m. May 6 in Northport, N.Y.
Two firefighters from the Northport Volunteer Fire Department suffered injuries. One was transported to an area hospital; the other was treated on scene. The nature and cause of those injuries was not revealed.
Not surprisingly, the fire quickly moved through the walls from the basement to the upper levels of the two-story house.
Four fire departments — East Northport, Centerport, Greenlawn and King’s Park — provided mutual aid and had the fire struck within an hour. Investigators do not suspect the fire was arson.
